Indigenous people represent 3% of Washington state’s population yet account for over 7% of its missing persons cases, a disparity leaders call a “crisis level.” In response, the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe hosted the second National Missing & Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) Coordinator Gathering in November 2025. This event brought together 60 leaders from 13 states—including law enforcement, government officials, and advocates—to improve communication, response strategies, and family services. Washington continues to lead with such initiatives as the Missing Indigenous Person Alert (MIPA) system, which has issued 194 alerts since 2022, and the Cold Case Investigations Unit, which has helped locate more than 20 missing persons. Leaders emphasize that while these tools are saving lives, expanding services and building trust remains essential.
