Native Americans comprise 24% of Montana’s missing persons reports despite representing only 6.5% of the population. To address this, the state enacted significant new legislation. House Bill 83 authorizes the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Advisory Council to accept private funds, while House Bill 545 adds a homicide investigator to the team. Prevention is also a priority: Senate Bill 107 mandates human trafficking curriculum for schools, and Senate Bill 245 requires training for bus drivers to identify trafficking indicators—critical steps given that over 80% of 2023’s missing reports involved minors. Additionally, the legislature passed a resolution urging Congress to fully fund Tribal law enforcement to close dangerous jurisdictional gaps.
