I am the Clearinghouse Manager for Oregon and I am curious if any of you are obtaining missing person photos to post online from NCIC?
Hi Julie,
We are obtaining some missing persons photos directly from law enforcement agencies who have been publishing some of their missing persons via Facebook. We have one agency here in Montana who is terrible at entering photos into NCIC BUT they post every photo of every missing person case on their Facebook. We’ll grab those images and put them in NCIC and on our website. We believe if they’re putting it on their social media pages – it has been vetted/verified.
On the flip side, a few years ago, we had an agency ask for a public alert using a Facebook photo when it turned out to be the kid’s cousin. So we encourage agencies to verify prior to entering social media images into NCIC.

Yes, here in New Mexico we do add the DL picture to the missing persons posters that we post. we cannot use a photo older then 5 years. we have also found a no image on the web that we use when we don’t have one to use. We are in the process of seeing what other kind of photos we can use for the posters. we want to make sure we are in compliance with the FBI.
We have not obtained any photos from NCIC here in California, is someone familiar with how to do so?
None of our agencies in WA are entering photos into NCIC related to missing persons. I’m unsure if it’s a training issue or what but we do not get them.
Florida here: We haven’t utilized photos from NCIC; however, we have from the Florida Crime Information Center. It’s not ideal due to size and quality. We try to stay away from DOC photos, which seems to be the frequent source of these FCIC photos. We do request the agency provides a colored photo. Depending on the type of case and time sensitivity, we can utilize DL photos from our state’s DL database.
Similar to Montana, we also pull photos from agency social media but typically ask for permission before we publish. If we find other, updated, or better-quality photos after the initial photo is provided, we again ask for permission to publish.
