Hi Christopher,
Here in Michigan, our state laws read that the AMBER Alert shall be administered by «the department» (which is defined as us as Michigan State Police), so we have the ultimate say in how we run the program. With that, we only follow the national guidelines for AMBER alert as it must be a child, under the age of 18. Instead of a Silver Alert, we have an Endangered Missing Advisory (EMA) that we use for all other scenarios, to include children with autism that have eloped, or elderly wanderers, etc.
We have recently experienced a legislature that wishes to appease their constituents by making us use the WEA for all EMAs. We are extremely protective of the AMBER Alert program as we don’t want the public to become desensitized to it (the «car alarm theory»), so we have articulated an extremely strict adherence to those guidelines. I would fight heavily against any «wiggle room» in AMBER Alert. The Silver Alerts/EMAs/EMPAs, etc are available for all other scenarios, but once we start to chip away at AMBER, it will lose it’s efficacy and become watered down and useless.enero 20, 2023 a las 4:06 pm en respuesta a: Posting photos of missing persons on public internet #15782Jolene HardestyParticipanteHi Julie,
Michigan here. We don’t have our own Clearinghouse website for the missing children. However, our Michigan Department of Health and Human Services does. They do require parental or guardians written authorization prior to posting the children’s pictures online. We at the Michigan State Police do not have a website because maintaining it and updating it with cases would be a full time job.Jolene HardestyParticipanteGreat question! If you find out, please let me know, too!
Jolene HardestyParticipanteGood morning, Nona!
To the best of my knowledge, we in Michigan have had zero interviews and media requests since Gabby’s case came about. I have, however, received a few inquiries from friends and family members who know me personally to talk about the disparities… but I am white, so I don’t know if that plays a factor?Jolene HardestyParticipanteMichigan issued 40 Endangered Missing Advisories (EMA) in 2018.
Jolene HardestyParticipanteHello from Michigan! We are similar to what Kris Rush has stated about MN. We have the «Endangered Missing Advisory» for all other missing persons who are not AMBER or Blue criteria. Also of note is we do not use the word «alert» for our endangered missing. Sometimes I feel we have a better response from the public – certainly on social media – reference an «advisory» so as to not over-stimulate the public with all the «alerts.» Eventually, they all get immune to being «alerted» for everything.
