Hi everyone, I’m doing some research for an AMBER Advocate Magazine mention of the locator app What3Words (https://what3words.com/products/what3words-app). Does anyone have experience using it to find missing youth/people? And if so, what do you think about it? Thanks in advance!

Here is a news story about its use in Rhode Island, but I see that it’s being used in Wisconsin, Alabama, Ohio, and Texas as well: https://turnto10.com/news/local/rhode-island-e-911-to-use-what3words-technology-to-better-locate-people-unique-three-word-combination-feb-29-2024

I would be interested to see what agencies in Ohio are using it as I too have not heard of this prior to now.

    Thanks for sharing!

Thanks, John! Here’s an Ohio news mention: https://dayton247now.com/news/local/city-of-kettering-encouraging-people-to-download-what3words-app-to-locate-911-calls . Any intel would be appreciated. 🙂

What3Words is a terrific app, and the data is some of the most accurate out there. While I don’t have knowledge of missing, I do know that it has been credited with several successful saves of persons who have been lost and are not on main roads. (It’s also helpful to locate a person who calls 911, but is not inside the residence – think about like a farmer in a field – 911 will send them to the house, but What3Words will direct them to the field.)

There’s a feature in the app where you can send your 3 words to another user and it will give directions. As a dispatcher, I have used to it help callers find their location when they have an accident and don’t know where they are. What3Words interfaces with the RapidSOS portal, which is another tool to help determine a callers location.

Hi Morrissa, your recommendation is greatly appreciated–and timely. We’re working on a feature for the next issue of the AMBER Advocate that will highlight using the app, so stay tuned. Thanks again for your helpful note.
