In 2019, Texas sent out 107 AMBER Alerts to the entire state (roughly 29 million). With this number of AMBER Alerts, we restrict not issuing WEAs between the hours of 11:00pm to 6:00am, we do everything else such as highway signs, lottery, NCIC, etc. If the person is still missing at 6:00am the next morning, we will issue the WEA.

Do any other comparable states have time restrictions for issuing WEAs?

Missouri does not currently have a time restriction; however, the volume of AMBER Alert is significantly lower. Three AMBER Alerts were broadcast statewide in 2019.

Tennessee is the same as Missouri, we do not have a time restriction, but we issued 4 in 2019. This year, however, we have already had 4 issued, leading us to believe we will likely surpass last years total. Like everywhere, we do get some negative feedback for issuing in the middle of the night, but it is amazing the volume of tips/leads we still receive in the middle of the night.

Idaho also has no time restrictions for issuing a WEA. We have had some complaints when we issue after 10pm. We implemented a new vendor last year, CodeRED and now have the ability to issue targeted WEA rather than solely statewide. We issued a WEA in April to a 4 county area late in the evening and received no complaints. Like Tennessee and Missouri, Idaho issues very few AA in a year.

Hello Ben. Pennsylvania has no time restrictions on WEA messages, but like many other states we only issue an AMBER Alert several times a year. If the circumstances warrant, we issue regional alerts instead of statewide alerts. We have also found that no matter when we issue an alert, numerous people call in complaints for a variety of reasons.

Hi Ben. Montana does not have any time restrictions on WEA messages. We have gotten a little flak when we have issued late night AMBER Alerts but we prefer to err on the safe side and broadcast the information when we have it. We’re similar to our neighbors in Idaho and Wyoming in that we don’t issue very many and don’t have nearly the population that Texas has.

    Hello,

Colorado does not have any official time restrictions but we try to adhere to the 22:00 – 6:00 time restrictions as much as possible. We have gotten A LOT of negative feedback from the public in the past when we have decided it was necessary to issue between those hours. If the circumstances allow for it, we may issue an endangered missing alert between the hours of 10 and 6 and then re-evaluate in the morning if it is still appropriate to upgrade to the AMBER. Our endangered missing alert hits most of the avenues you mentioned such as NCIC, highway signs, news media, etc. As far as I can remember, we have never issued only pieces of the AMBER during the «down hours.» If we decide to go AMBER, we do the EAS and WEA as well.

    Ben,
Alaska does not have a time restriction for alerts; however, we have a very limited road system and population. We have not issued an AMBER alert in 2 years.

    Hi Ben,

Florida does have a time restriction on sending the WEA, our restricted hours are 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. If the child is still missing after 7:00 a.m. we will contact local law enforcement to see if they would like the WEA sent at that time.

    Ben,
Iowa does not have any time restrictions on alerts. We usually only issue a few a year.

    Sorry for the delayed response..
NC does not activate the WEA between 10:00pm and 6:000am. If the child is still missing the next
morning our plans are to activate between 6 and 6:30am

In Nebraska, we do not have a time constraint on WEA alerts. All are issued statewide, however we don’t have very many per year.
