Nebraska initiated a process improvement last year after we had some problems with a WEA that didn’t work (Verizon problem) and emails that didn’t go out (state Patrol problem). We met with stakeholders and eliminated two forms the parents or guardians had been required to sign before an alert was issued.
Our official method of request was fax. We updated it to allow for email notification to an email address and also offer AMBER and EMA requests via our website, which sends the request to the same email address that all verification officers monitor. We still ask the requesting agency to call our dispatch center to alert us to the request.
For issuing, we post it to our website, which at the same time generates email alerts to our media and other partners. We then use Alertsense to send the EAS and WEA. Previously, our National Weather service would send the EAS message and the national center would send the WEA. This cuts out two possible delays.
