Hello Coordinators, This is a message from Pennsylvania State Police AMBER Alert Coordinators:

Pennsylvania State Police Amber Alert Desensitization Research Project Request for participation:

The Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Investigation Assessment Unit / Amber Alert program is currently in the process of conducting a research project involving the desensitization of the public to frequent use of the audible AMBER Alert alarm. Currently in PA there exists legislation to have the WEA alert system used to alert the public to hit and run crashes where serious bodily injury or death has occurred. The basis of this research project is to show the effects of being exposed to frequent WEA alerts, and its effects on desensitizing the public to actual Amber Alerts.

Our unit conducts Amber / MEPA Alert trainings throughout the course of the year to State Police cadets, Police Dispatchers, and various other law enforcement members. The training consists of a two to three hour presentation in which students learn about the Amber / MEPA alert criteria, alerting process, and requesting procedures. We will be utilizing students in these classers to serve as our target audience.

The PSP AMBER Alert Unit is seeking assistance from other state’s AMBER Alert Units who conduct similar training in their state, to participate in this research project. This would be on a voluntary basis and all data for this project would be collected by the PSP for the purposes of furthering this research. The research tool we are planning to use is simplistic and would not require a lot of time or work on your part.

Please contact Tpr. Jeff Baney by email at [email protected] if you are interested in participating in our study or if you have an questions.
