I would like to hear from other clearinghouse managers about any repeat runaway prevention programs you have. Do you refer LEOs to other resources to deal with repeat runaways? Do you provide any information to them on filing a PINS? Any information will be appreciated.
    Thank you.

Hi Cindy, While I am not with the Michigan Clearinghouse anymore (but, I am the Region 3 Liaison now!), I can say that during my tenure in the MI Clearinghouse, we did not have anything in place addressing this issue. We did implement an Access database that we began tracking cases with the hopes that we could target the kids that had multiple runs. I think the problem became that we were overwhelmed with the large amount of runaways and not having enough staffing to address that issue alone. I am also interested in hearing from the other states on what they have done to combat the problem.

One thing we did implement was missing children “sweeps”, much like a fugitive sweep, by running all the local missing in NCIC and them creating packets to get teams to go out looking for them. This was a big hit and we almost always found over half of the cases we were looking for. But none of this addressed the long-term runaways or the repeat kids.

North Dakota has nothing state wide. The county and city jurisdictions may have something. The Bismarck PD works with Youth Works which address runaway issues.

Kansas Department of Child and Family Services, has created a unit that goes out in looks for missing runaways that are in state custody. The majority of our juvenile runaways are in state custody that they repeatedly run.

Hi Cindy, we don’t have anything statewide in Idaho. I would love to see what has worked for other states, also a tracking method for our repeat runaways. We have a very basic repository and it would be neat to set up a better system for agencies to track our juveniles that runaway often. Anther area of concern is interviewing the child when located, some agencies do a great job of it, some barely at all. It would be nice to have consistency.
